Brother Sits

1660837_381126388703672_1316866599466710006_nMy brother sits in his truck, parked at the front curb of Mother’s house. He sits and smokes and talks to someone only he can see. The one hundred degree heat doesn’t seem to phase him, though he shows signs of its effects. Even so, as the sweat beads on his forehead, Brother sits…lost in deep conversation with a dear friend that only he can see.

    1. My brother has gone around the bend, as they say. It’s devastating to watch. He refuses medication or any help, whatsoever. But, I finally realized something…As gone as he is, the only time he’s hurting from it…the only time he’s aware of it…is during lucid moments, which are so rare and so fleeting. For that, I’m grateful. He is a dangerous man, as he’s always been, long before onset of his schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. My brother is frightening, to put it mildly. But, as I watched him the truck that day, I felt some peace in my heart for him. He doesn’t know any better…and why does he even have to at this point?
I hope that, if you’re ever going through it, that you’re able to be strong enough to take your meds and maintain some insight into what’s happening. I never dreamed my badass biker brother would be such a lamb in so many ways later in his life. If it can happen to him, it can happen to anyone.
      Big hugs to you!

      1. Fortunately for me, my episodes of psychosis are few and far between (thanks to medication) but know that your brother is in a world of his own making which isn’t necessarily filled with demons. Visual and aural hallucinations can take many forms, some of which are pleasant or even hypnotic and alluring. I’m so sorry that your brother is going through these things. I know several people with Schizophrenia who are able to function well on Meds and it must be devastating to watch the steady decline of someone you love. Thinking of you, your brother and the rest of your family with love and I’m always here if you need someone to talk to.
